Taking part is easy!

  • Find wildlife. It could be a bird, insect, plant or any other sign of life.

  • Take a picture. Snap a photo of what you find with your smart phone or digital camera.

  • Share! Upload your observations to iNaturalist.org or with the iNaturalist mobile app.

A quick overview on how to participate…

Where can i participate?

Nature can be found ANYWHERE! In the school playground, at the park, in your yard, in the ditch, along the bike trail, deep in the woods, even in the crack of the sidewalk!

You can also attend an event during the City Nature Challenge weekend.

During the City Nature Challenge, observations made on the iNaturalist app or at inaturalist.org in any of the following parishes will count toward the Baton Rouge challenge: Ascension, East Baton Rouge, East Feliciana, Iberville, Livingston, Pointe Coupee, St. Helena, St. Tammany, Tangipahoa, Washington, West Baton Rouge, and West Feliciana.

Any observations made in these locations during the official event period will automatically count toward the challenge.

It’s a contest!

The more people who participate and the more species we observe, the better results we will have. We are competing against the other participating cities, plus we have a friendly competition going against New Orleans and Southwest Louisiana too. So get out there and join in on the fun!

Challenge another group to a friendly competition! You can start your own project in iNaturalist to track the results.

Inclusion

The outdoors should be inclusive, safe and accessible to everyone. Nature, science, and conservation transcends political, cultural and social boundaries -- and we ALL can make a difference!
